World No. 838 Sergey Fomin capped his dream week in Kazakhstan by winning the Shymkent Challenger 2. The 21-year-old qualifier from Uzbekistan defeated Dutch veteran Robin Haase 7-6(4), 6-3 in Saturday’s singles final of the $53,120 ATP Challenger clay-court event.

Fomin, who reached a career-high ranking of World No. 576 in January 2019 and appeared in his first main draw on the ATP Challenger Tour in three years, battled his way to the championship match through the top half with wins over Alibek Kachmazov from Russia, Germany’s Sebastian Fanselow, No. 4 seed Kaichi Uchida from Japan and last week’s Shymkent champion Emilio Nava from the United States.
